SECTION II: OBJECT OF THE DESIGN CONTEST/DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
II.1) DESCRIPTION
II.1.1) Title attributed to the design contest/project by the
contracting authority/entity: ULI European Student Urban Design
Competition.
II.1.2) Short description: ULI European Student Urban Design Competition
With sponsorship from ECE, Grosvenor and Hines
The new annual ULI European Student Urban Design Competition is intended
to promote an interdisciplinary approach to urban design and development
problems, while encouraging cooperation and teamwork among future real
estate professionals and the many allied professions, such as
architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, historic
preservation, engineering, real estate development, finance, and others.
Each year a large-scale site will be chosen in an urban regeneration area
located in Europe. These sites will present complex challenges, needing
practicable, innovative solutions that reflect responsible land use. The
solutions are to be multifaceted, incorporating design, planning, market
potential and feasibility, and development strategies. The submission to
the competition will be presentation drawings, tables, schedules, and
text. The competition, which is an outgrowth of the ULI Gerald D. Hines
Student Urban Design Competition in North America, is an ideas
competition; there is no guarantee or expectation that any of the
submitted schemes will be applied to any site. Student teams can be
formed at all European universities (including Turkey and Russia). Teams
must consist of 5 members, with each student responsible for a
¿function": architect, landscape architect, urban planner / geographer or
financial expert. The team members must represent a minimum of 3
disciplines that grant 3 different degrees, at least one of the members
must represent a function of a financial expert and be enrolled in an
degree program that is not design related. The appropriate academic
supporting documentation must be provided for the allocated function of
every team member in the form of proof of enrolment or similar. ULI will
pre-qualify each team. The web site www.udeurocompetition.uli.org)
contains details about qualifications. The entire competition will be
conducted in English. Entries will be judged in 2 stages. In the first
stage, the team responds to the urban design problem posed.
The briefing materials will include a comprehensive problem statement,
background information on the site, market information, any relevant
existing design proposals, maps, etc. Teams will also be given a specific
list of required presentation materials. The competition jury then meets
to review all submissions and chooses four finalist teams, who will then
complete the second stage of the competition. In the second stage, the
remaining four teams will have the opportunity to expand their original
schemes and respond in more detail to the problem posed by the
competition. One member of each team will be brought to the city where
the site is located, with expenses paid, and will have the opportunity to
tour the site and meet with select individuals in order to revise and
enhance their presentations. In early June, the entire team will, at
ULI"s expense, return to the site city, and present its program to the
jury as well as to invited guests, other students, and appropriate
participants. That day will culminate in the announcement of the winner
and the disbursal of the prize money: 35 000 EUR to the winning team and
7 000 EUR to the finalists.
